Week one lecture note summary:

People first, process next. Or once the process is in place the people becomes most important.

We spoke about the importance of practicing the art of project management ( the people side) at every opportunity in your daily lives. Being comfortable with people and on teams can result in opportunity.

Develop networks through saying hello to people and asking them open ended questions about what they do. Learn a little about "everything" when opportunity arises so that you ask intelligent questions when you meet people. Consider joining 'Toastmasters' to learn public speaking and leadership - when you start your career.

Your ability to 'relate' to people is as important as the skills you have in your profession. Companies look for people who can fit well into a team environment. This might be monitored in a company environment by whether you get out of your seat and move around the room introducing yourself when opportunity presents itself.

Always try and get to meetings early enough to meet a few people before the meeting starts. Networks contacts are invaluable sources for getting job leads.

A long journey is made up of small steps. Take a few steps each day to move yourself toward your goals.

Projects management is used to manage objectives in today's business world. Middle manager's have been replace by Project managers. Do a good job on a project as a manager or team member and you will be invited to work on another project.

Teams can be spread out across the world and communicate electronically. therefore your personality characteristics are as equally important as your skills.

Leadership

Make sure that your groups for your Final project have a good mix of skill sets. You don't want 5 people who are excellent at PowerPoint. You need a good mix of skill sets and a strong leader. You will choose a Project Manager. Don't let people just volunteer without checking how are they going to lead and what is their commitment to the success of the Group.

We will form Final Groups in Week 4. The project you will submit a Written Report and make a presentation on is worth 30% of your overall mark. 20% for the written report and 10% for the presentation to the class. You will have three weeks to meet member of the class before you form teams. Start making contacts and avoid making early commitments.

We will form temporary groups for week 2 and 3 so can you try working with a few people. As a group you will find an interesting project on the web or wherever and present it as a group in Week 3.
